In Lakeville, MA, we took these older-looking stairs, replaced the treads with custom-built red oak treads to match the themes of the rest of their house and stained them to match. We also replaced the newel posts and balusters, completely modernizing their stairwell, and gave the walls, stained trim, and front door a fresh coat of paint to elevate the modern feeling of the room.
